Entry 26 to 30 of 35. << Previous | Next >> July 13, 2003 | My very own road movie goes on, but until now I've neither seen Thelma nor Louise. After I spent nearly one month in Turkey I came to Syria some days ago. Turkey was already muslim but now it gets definitely arabic. The first point you notice immedeatly are the pictures of Assad junior and senior you see everywhere. But apart of this you don't get in touch with the regime as all the people are nice and you constantly hear "Welcome to Syria!". Because of censorship in the medias they don't know what's going on politically either. I quite enjoy the food here and life here is really cheap as prices even dropped more because the tourusts stay off this country. All in all a place to stay, it's only the hot weather that pushes me forward, seeking for colder weather. |
June 22, 2003 | I did it, I left Europe behind and the next months it's gonna be Asia to discover. After spending some days in the Bulgarian mountains and doing the usual tourist sightseeing in Istanbul, I finally left Europe via the Bosporus. Traveling by motorbike has several advantages: I could follow the small mountain roads to the south. And here the people are really nice and not carpet-sellers. But in the meantime I have already descended to the coastline with its typical overcrowded summer-holiday ressorts. |
June 7, 2003 | At this time I'm having my last day in Sofia. Since the last update of the web page I've ridden through Kosovo into Albania, from where I continued to Bulgaria via Macedonia. Kosovo and Albania have been very impressive parts. Kosovo mainly because of the heavy presence of international troops, and Albania because of its strict communist past and the poverty seen on the country side. Besides Skopje Macedonia was quite a surprise because of its high living standard, probably because it was left out from war. In Bulgaria I have only seen Sofia up to now, and the city is really a pleasant place. Tomorrow I will head off to Turkey. In the meantime it's one month ago that I took off, I have crossed into the first different timezone, and I slowly start to realise that this is not just the normal summer motorbike vacation. It probably will last longer, but the feeling of freedom is good, very good! |
Mai 29, 2003 | Actually I'm in Belgrade. In the meantime I've ridden down the Dalmatian coast, had a sight at Dubrovnik and went on to the countries that were more involved in the war than Slovenia and Croatia. Mainly on the countryside of Bosnia-Hercegovina it looked like the houses of civilians have been arbitrarily bombed. There are not many signs of destruction Sarajevo anymore and in Belgrade there's almost nothing. Besides the NATO-bombing, war was never here. Opposite to what many told I felt quite safe here in these countries, the people are very hospitable. I doubt if this can change as fast as some people think. Even the assassination of Djinjic did not change the situation here. After talks with the Swiss office in Pristina and the embassador in Tirana I decided today to go to Albania via Kosovo. Besides bad roads the region should be safe, and bad roads are not that bad to me as you may think... |
Mai 17, 2003 | After my sudden depearture last Sunday I'm already one week on the road. I proceeded quite fast through Austria and Italy, but I started slowing down in Slovenia. The Julian Alps are very nice and the capitol Ljubljana is worth a sight as well. Actually I'm in Zagreb for two days and I will proceed to the Dalmatien coast tomorrow. See the pictures of it on my web page. |
